She acted as a lecturer and Programme Convenor in both the University of Pretoria and University of Cape Town Landscape Architecture and Architecture programmes. A Masters degree in anthropology provided her skills in understanding various cultures and their relationship with landscapes. She is actively involved in the heritage field, completing heritage audits, management plans and designs for Cultural Landscapes across Southern Africa and internationally.

Liana is currently Director of Cape Cultural Landscapes, who developed a Heritage Inventory and Conservation Management Plan for the Stellenbosch Cultural Landscape. She acts as an external examiner for final year Masters in Landscape Architecture programmes at the Universities of Cape Town and Pretoria. Liana is the ICOMOS Vice President Africa of the International Scientific Committee for Cultural Landscapes and an expert member of the ICOMOS International Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage.

She co-edited the books Ann Sutton Landscape Architect, Engraved Landscape : Biesje Poort : Many Voices and the South African Landscape Architecture Compendium and Reader. She also published chapters in the books Routledge Handbook on Cultural Landscape Practice and Rural Resistance in South Africa: The Mpondo Revolts after Fifty Years.

Her passion for healing and medicinal plants culminated in the creation of the natural skincare brand Fijn Botanicals, that focus on using fynbos plants in various formulations. The products are created on the organic farm, Kogman and Keisie, on the slopes of the Montagu Nature Reserve in South Africa. She lives and works here with her husband Petrus and children Anno and Lilja.
